Texas Original compassionate grower reduces opioid intake by 67 percent with medicinal cannabis

TOCC launches new advocacy program to highlight the formidable success stories of Texas patients and the potential of medicinal cannabis for the treatment of opioid addiction and a wide variety of painful conditions

AUSTIN, Texas, July 13, 2021 – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Texas Original Compassionate Cultivation (TOCC), Texas’ leading provider of medical cannabis, today announced the launch of its patient-centered awareness and advocacy series to promote the fight against opioids – State Epidemic and Campaign to Expand Texas Medical Cannabis Program. Advocates for Cannabis in Texas – or ACT – aims to highlight the Texan patients who have found relief and comfort in the life-changing power of medical cannabis from TOCC.

The new advocacy program reaffirms TOCC’s commitment to serving thousands of Texans suffering from debilitating diseases and opioid addictions who either have no access to medical cannabis or are unnecessarily restricted by existing laws.

TOCC’s medicine has proven to be a cheap substitute for highly addictive opioids, with a patient effectively treating their symptoms with medicinal cannabis while reducing their monthly opioid pill intake by about 67 percent.

Casey Lusk, a TOCC patient and resident of Lubbock, Texas, has Charcot-Marie-Tooth disorder, a rare degenerative nerve disease that causes painful neuropathy and muscle weakness. Lusk’s neurologist prescribed several opioids to relieve symptoms, so he had to take 180 tablets each month without getting any significant relief and adding to the state’s rise in opioid addiction.

Lubbock County had one of the highest opioid withdrawal rates in Texas in 2019, with 95 filled prescriptions per 100 people, according to the CDC. After a doctor prescribed TOCC’s medicinal cannabis for relief, Lusk reduced his opioid intake to about 60 pills a month within 10 months.

The story goes on

“Medical cannabis has enabled me to turn away from opioids and restore my confidence in finding an effective option to treat my rare disease,” said Lusk. “It offers physical relief – when opioids didn’t – from painful neuropathy without the dangerous side effects or the risk of an addiction that I think of as a recovering alcoholic. TOCC’s medical cannabis has helped me cut my monthly pill intake by more than half. Cannabis is a drug, not a drug, and I hope to stop using opioids altogether if Texas lawmakers continue to expand the state’s medical cannabis program and raise the THC limit. “

The Texas legislature recently passed the 1535 House Bill to expand the state’s Compassionate Use Program. The original iteration of the bill raised the THC limit and added chronic pain to the list of qualifying conditions for which an opioid would otherwise be prescribed. The Texas Senate lowered the proposed maximum THC limit from 5 to 1 percent by weight and eliminated chronic pain, but did not establish an opioid alternative program.

“Opioids are literally invading our state’s communities and we are leaving the best resource we have to completely eliminate them from the battlefield,” said Morris Denton, CEO of TOCC. “Casey’s story – and that of countless others like him – combined with the latest research on cannabis as a safe and effective opioid alternative should all be the evidence we need to fully authorize its use in Texans. Unfortunately that is not the case yet. TOCC will continue to advocate for countless Texans by providing patients with a platform to speak their truth about how medical cannabis has changed their lives for the better. “

TOCC recently launched Texas’ first pure THC tincture, a new lozenge, and its first brand of gum products for qualified patients. Products are available for nationwide delivery at www.texasoriginal.com, their pharmacy in Austin, Texas, and the company’s convenient pickup locations in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.
